Alberta Child, Teen & Family Counselling

Practical support for children, teens, parents, and families in Calgary and across Alberta who are feeling stuck or overwhelmed — navigating behavioural concerns, emotional challenges, developmental questions, or changes within the family system.

When your child is struggling, you feel it too

When something's wrong with your child, it can consume you. You notice the changes — the withdrawal, the outbursts, the anxiety, the slipping grades — and you carry the worry long after they've gone to bed. You've likely tried everything you can think of, and it's exhausting to feel like you're doing it alone, unsure whether you're helping or making it worse..

You don't have to have it all figured out. That's what we're here for. We work with children, teens, and the parents who love them — offering a calm, relaxing, non-clinical setting and a judgment-free space to understand what's really going on and a practical path forward, together.

Therapy for Children & Teens

Therapy for children, teens, and adolescents can help when emotions, behaviour, stress, school, relationships, or family changes are becoming harder to manage.

Sessions provide a supportive space for children and teens to feel understood, build confidence, learn practical coping skills, and develop a stronger sense of who they are.

We commonly support children and teens with:

  • Anxiety, worry, low mood, or emotional overwhelm

  • Anger, irritability, shutdown, or emotional outbursts

  • School stress, academic pressure, focus, and motivation

  • Friendship difficulties, bullying, identity, confidence, and belonging

  • ADHD-related challenges with regulation, impulsivity, and organization

  • Family conflict, separation, divorce, grief, trauma, or major life transitions

The goal is not to “fix” your child or teen. The goal is to better understand what is happening, help them feel less alone with it, and support them in developing tools they can actually use at home, at school, and in their relationships.

Family Therapy

Family therapy can help when communication, conflict, stress, separation, blended family changes, or emotional distance are affecting the whole family. Sessions focus on improving understanding, breaking repeated patterns, and helping parents, children, and teens relate to each other with more clarity and connection.

Family therapy may help with:

  • Parent-child conflict
  • Sibling tension
  • Separation, divorce, or blended family transitions
  • Communication breakdowns
  • Emotional disconnection or withdrawal
  • Behavioural concerns affecting the whole home
  • Rebuilding trust, structure, and connection

The goal is to slow things down, understand what's happening beneath the conflict, and build healthier ways of responding to one another.

Parenting Support

Whether you are parenting together, co-parenting, or a single parent, SPS parenting counselling and consultations are collaborative, practical, and tailored to your family’s unique circumstances.

Parenting consultations focus on understanding your child’s developmental stage, emotional experiences, and behaviour, while also supporting your role as a parent.

Therapy may include:

  • Clarifying concerns and identifying underlying patterns

  • Strengthening parent–child communication

  • Developing realistic, effective parenting strategies

  • Reducing stress and increasing confidence in decision-making

  • Supporting healthier family dynamics

Our licensed therapists and counsellors take a compassionate, developmental and evidence-based approach that respects both the child’s needs and the realities of parenting.

How parenting therapy can help improve your relationship with your child(ren)

When parenting feels stressful, it can start to affect your connection with your child. Everyday moments can turn into power struggles or emotional blowups. Over time, this can leave both you and your child feeling misunderstood or on edge.

Parent consultations help by giving you a clearer understanding of what your child is experiencing emotionally and developmentally and how they may be trying to communicate those needs through their behavior. As you gain insight into what’s really driving their reactions, it becomes easier to respond in ways that reduce conflict and support connection.

What to Expect in a Parenting Consultation

You’ll work one-on-one with a psychologist to better understand what’s driving your child’s behaviour and emotional responses — and how your responses, routines, and communication patterns may be influencing what’s happening.

Together, we focus on:

  • Understanding your child’s emotional and developmental needs

  • Identifying patterns that may be increasing conflict or stress

  • Learning practical, evidence-based strategies you can use right away

  • Improving communication between you and your child

  • Creating more consistency and confidence in your parenting approach

In-person and virtual
across Alberta

We offer our Child, Teen & Family Counselling services in-person at our Willow Park Centre office in Calgary and virtually for clients across Alberta.

Our in-person space is intentionally designed to feel safe and welcoming for the whole family, with puzzles, games, free wifi, a candy bowl, and refreshments. Our virtual sessions offer the same quality of care — with the flexibility to connect from home, work, or anywhere private and comfortable.

Parenting Workshops

In addition to individual sessions and consultations, we offer a series of workshops designed to provide ongoing psychoeducation and support for parents. These workshops focus on building practical skills, deepening understanding, and supporting parents beyond individual sessions.

At this time, one workshop is available in our parenting series, focusing on co-regulation for sensitive children. This workshop is designed to help parents better understand emotional sensitivity and learn strategies to support regulation, connection, and emotional safety.

If this workshop is of interest to you, please click the "Join the Waitlist" button below. Once we have enough people on the waitlist, we will let you know more details for registration.

We invite you to check back as additional workshops are introduced.

Insurance and billing options

SPS strives to help parents across Alberta access mental health support. While we currently do not direct bill to insurance providers, we provide detailed receipts for each session that many of our clients can submit to their insurance provider for reimbursement.

Most Alberta insurance plans that include mental health coverage reimburse services provided by a Registered Psychologist or Registered Provisional Psychologist.

Depending on your individual plan, a portion or all of your therapy fees may be eligible for reimbursement.
