ADHD Assessment & Treatment in Alberta

Clear answers and practical support for children, teens, and adults living with ADHD — in Calgary and virtually across Alberta. Support for focus, organization, emotional regulation, and everyday functioning.

What is ADHD assessment and treatment?

ADHD affects focus, organization, emotional regulation, and daily functioning — at school, at work, and at home. When it goes unrecognized, it can quietly shape self-esteem, relationships, and confidence over time.

At Shirley Psychological Services, our ADHD Assessment & Treatment Program offers screening, assessment, treatment planning, and ongoing support — so you understand what's really going on and what to do next. The program is led by Monique Dauphinais, R.Psych.

How assessment and treatment can improve daily life and confidence

When ADHD goes unrecognized, everyday tasks can feel harder than they should — and that strain can build into frustration, self-blame, and shame. Assessment brings clarity, and treatment gives you practical tools, so daily life feels more manageable and you can work with your strengths instead of against them.

The Assessment & Treatment Process, Step by Step

Clients without an existing ADHD diagnosis typically move through four phases. Clients who already have a diagnosis and want a second opinion or confirmation can enter at Phase 1 and proceed from there.

One initial information-gathering session, in person or virtually, to determine whether a full assessment is warranted. Preliminary assessment forms are sent when you book. If pre-screening points to a full assessment, you'll be encouraged to book a clinical interview to review the results and move forward.

Phase 1 - Pre-Screening

The formal process for assessing whether ADHD is present. This phase includes one clinical interview, standardized ADHD and executive-function measures, form scoring, collateral input where appropriate, and a written report with a customized treatment plan.

Phase 2 - Assessment, Treatment Planning & Report

Once your report is ready, your clinician books a time with you — in person or virtually — to walk through the results and proposed treatment plan. Planning focuses on practical, real-world strategies tailored to your needs, and clarifies which interventions may help going forward.

Phase 3 — Report Session

The implementation stage, with ongoing support as needed. This may include ADHD-focused therapy, executive-skills coaching, education about ADHD's impacts, family support, school or workplace recommendations, accommodation letters, and coordination with medical providers for medication management. Follow-up sessions track progress, refine strategies, and help you build sustainable daily systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The total fee is $1,500, split into three payments of $500. This structure may help you submit receipts to your extended health benefits provider as services are completed.

  • The program runs in stages, and payments are divided across those stages. This can make reimbursement easier — you can submit receipts as services are completed, and where applicable, spread claims across benefit periods.

If at any point in time the assessment findings are not suggestive of ADHD, the therapist may stop the assessment and explore other possibilities with the client. If this occurs, the therapist will adjust billing accordingly.

  • The pre-screening (Phase 1) is a separate first step to determine whether a full assessment is warranted. Once you've completed your clinical interview in Phase 2, form scoring and report creation typically take approximately 2–4 weeks. Timelines may vary depending on complexity and collateral input. When your report is complete, your clinician will reach out to book your report session to walk you through the results and treatment plan.

  • Assessments are completed by a Registered Psychologist, and many extended health plans include coverage for psychological services. We provide detailed receipts you can submit for reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan, so confirm your benefits directly with your provider before booking.

  • Yes. If you'd like a second opinion or confirmation of an existing diagnosis, you can enter the program at the pre-screening stage and proceed from there.

  • Yes. Phase 2 includes a written report with a customized treatment plan, and Phase 3 is a dedicated session to walk you through the results.

  • Yes. Depending on your needs, Phase 4 can include school or workplace recommendations, accommodation letters, and coordination with medical providers.

  • It's flexible and moves at your pace. There's no fixed number of sessions — clients decide how much ongoing support they want and can space sessions out as they wish. Several factors help guide that decision, including your insurance coverage, how much ADHD is disrupting your work or school environment, and the impact it's having on your relationships and emotional regulation. During your report session, Monique will provide an outline with her suggestions, so you'll have a clear starting point to plan from.

  • Reach out through our Contact form and we'll help you figure out the right first step.

ADHD Workshops

In addition to individual ADHD assessment and treatment, we're developing a series of workshops designed to provide practical psychoeducation and support beyond one-on-one sessions.

Our first workshop, led by Monique Dauphinais, R.Psych, focuses on women with ADHD — exploring how ADHD often shows up differently in women, why it's so frequently missed or diagnosed late, and practical strategies for working with your strengths rather than against them.

Additional workshops will be added over time based on interest and demand. Join the waitlist to be the first to know when registration opens.
